HARRISBURG – Rep. Ron Marsico (R-Dauphin)
announced today he will seek re-election to the state House of
Representatives to continue to represent the 105th Legislative
District.
“It has been one of the greatest honors of my
life to be able to represent all of my constituents by serving
in the General Assembly,” Marsico said. “I am extremely proud of
all that I have accomplished in the past 17 years and realize
that none of it would have been possible had it not been for the
support of my constituency.”
Highway safety and transportation
improvements have been top priorities for Marsico since joining
the House in 1989. As chairman of the House Transportation
Committee’s Subcommittee on Highways, he has obtained millions
of dollars in funding for local highway improvement efforts.
In addition, Marsico is a founding member of
the Capital Beltway Advisory Committee, a comprehensive safety
initiative that includes nearly two dozen representatives of
area transportation, law enforcement, highway safety, and
trucking and motoring industry representatives. The committee’s
activities have helped lead to a reduction of accidents on the
Capital Beltway by raising awareness about the importance of
slowing down and avoiding aggressive driving tactics.
The lawmaker also serves on the coordinating
committee for the Harrisburg Area Transportation Study, which
works to plan for the region’s future transportation
infrastructure needs. He continues to fight for adequate funding
for highways and the enormous amount of state-owned bridges
classified as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete in
the commonwealth.
Marsico recently helped to pass legislation
that will improve the safety of communities across Pennsylvania
by accelerating the reporting process of sex offenders and
sexually violent predators. He has also authored laws to help
protect children locally and across the state from the dangers
of drug abuse by banning look-alike drug sales to minors and
strengthen mandatory minimum penalties against heroin dealers.
Marsico has also advocated for legislation
that would allow parents to test their minor children for drugs
and for a new law to increase penalties against rapists who
victimize young children and those who cause serious bodily
injuries to their victims, regardless of the victim’s age.
To help citizens struggling with the cost of
property taxes, healthcare and heating costs, Marsico continues
to support programs such as the Property Tax/Rent Rebate
program, the Partnership for Prescription Assistance program and
the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance program (LIHEAP). These
programs allow qualified citizens to receive a refund based on
the amount of property tax or rent they paid during the previous
year, obtain the medicines they need if they lack prescription
coverage and pay their heating bills.
The lawmaker is also working to ensure
continued access to quality health care in Pennsylvania by
supporting a law to reform the state’s medical malpractice
insurance system and to address the growing shortage of nurses
in hospitals and across the state.
Recently, Marsico co-sponsored legislation
that would rein in state government spending by limiting the
General Fund budget spending growth to the rate of inflation.
This legislation also designates any budget surplus not required
by law to be invested in the state’s Rainy Day Fund to be
returned to taxpayers via a tax credit. This measure would
prioritize and identify the most vital and effective state
programs for funding while still keeping the size of government
in check.
“I intend to continue my efforts to bring
about reform in the areas of property tax, public safety,
healthcare and state government. Additionally, I am determined
to create equitable funding for Central Pennsylvania schools,”
Marsico said. “If re-elected, I would have the opportunity to
hold a significant leadership position as chairman of a standing
committee, a position that would enable me to have a stronger
role in shaping public policy and legislative procedure.
“I also pledge to maintain my perfect
attendance record and work towards bringing back an open,
accountable and responsive legislative process.”
Marsico was first elected to the House in
November 1988. The 105th District includes the townships of
Lower Paxton, East Hanover, South Hanover, and West Hanover.
